The Change

Gentrification {gen·tri·fi·ca·tion}

Defined as, the process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents.

It's not a surprise to anyone that has been a resident of Bridgeport, CT for 5 years or more that the city is changing, it's debatable as to whether or not this change is good or bad, but it's happening.

The city has become more diverse, business are opening to accommodate the newer residents, landmark buildings are now becoming trendy lofts, but the question most long time residents ask is "What about us, are we still going to be welcomed here?"

As a Street Photographer I spend a great deal of time literally walking through the city, chasing what once was and admiring what's coming. Below are photos of what is soon to be gone from the South End of Bridgeport, a portion of Marina Village, a low income housing community that's been in a landmark since the 1940.

Some people will see the photos and say "Well it's an eye sore, and it's not a good look for the city", others will say "It was home, I have memories of playing there as a kid" and Officials will say "Just wait until you see what's coming!".

Ultimately a change is coming, the city is being "revived", I hope we can all embrace the change and bring Bridgeport back to greatness.
