Jumping Off The Porch

Jumping Off The Porch

It’s easy to overlook the significance of a porch, it’s the threshold to our neighborhood, a post for observation, and it’s often a place to build community.

When I started to become serious about photography it was always the goal to do work that told our story. Over the last few years I’ve had the opportunity to utilize my skills in service of the Freeman Center, to help tell the story of our people.

The collection of photographs represent the most recent work I’ve done with the Freeman Center, photographing an artistic replica of their porches. These extremely beautiful glass sculptures are the work of Rachel Owens, an artist who cast the original porches to create these sculptures that are actually filled with elements of the community that surrounds the homes.

I documented these porches in October, and I’m still in awe of the details and story behind these sculptures.

Please check out the Freeman Center to learn more about the sisters who helped to birth a community that still stands today, as well as their homes which have been standing strong since the mid-1800s.
